History

Spiral Staircase Systems was founded as Lewes Design Contracts in 1966 by Tyl Kennedy and Colin Sullivan. Our first design was the original DS (domestic stair), using a system of cast iron brackets, laminated timber treads and handrail, and steel balustrading. With refinement, and a change to aluminium, this system remains in production today, as part of the DS range.

By 1972 we had outgrown our Lewes premises, and moved to the nearby village of Glynde where manufacture continues to this day. We have dedicated wood and metalwork facilities where all the structures for special stairs are constructed and new designs are developed. Among Spiral’s many technological advances, one of the most significant was the development of a seamless helical steel handrail.
